2010 JLGA NEWSLETTER |
Issue #1 - January |
| GREETINGS | Hope this email finds everyone staying warm & thawed out. It looks like it is finally warming up. The mounds of ice that we've pulled out of water buckets have finally began to shrink. I had been getting reports of many being without water & having to pack water from someone else's place or from the nearby creek. I can sympathize with everyone in this situation as we were right along with everyone else. Even though it looks like we are getting back to warmer weather, below are some of the great suggestions from members on what they did to get through the very low temps. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SUGGESTIONS FROM MEMBERS FOR COLD WEATHER PRECAUTIONS |
1. If you are having to
transport water from place to place
- use ice chest with a tight
secure lid - the water in the
ice chest freezes much more slowly
(if at all) & therefore that's one place
that you don't have to break
the ice from to get fresh
water for your livestock - we
have personally tried this & it
works great, just need more ice
chest!! 2. To help the animals deal with the cold better, if you are fortunate to have warm water, treat your goats to a bucket of warm water with an electrolyte solution in it - Put it out in small amounts - just enough for them to drink at one time so it will be all gone & not have time to cool off. With our temperatures staying very low at nights we all need to take extra precautions where our goats are concerned, especially if you are kidding right now. Some more of these suggestions from other ranches & farms are listed below.
1. If you
have access to pine shavings, make
a nice thick bed for your
goats to sleep on - the
shaving provide a layer of warmth
against the cold ground & also
help to absorb wetness - if
shavings are not available, one
member suggested putting down hay -
the only thing with this is to
make sure you also have some
out in a feeder for them to
eat or they will eat their
bedding - another suggestion was
gathering pine straw and lay down
for bedding - we found our
goats like to eat the pine
straw unless we have hay readily
available for them to choose from.
If you have a suggestion on goat health or care & would like to send it to other, please send it to me using this email addy & I will make sure it goes out to our members. www.boeredsillygoatranch@hotmail.com Attention Ms. Cindy |

HELPFUL INFORMATION
|
I
have decided to Show goats. |
| 1. First you need to
know what classes are offered
through your 4-H & FFA
Associations in your state. Since
the types of shows & classes different from state to state & show to show, the best thing is to contact your local County Agent for your Parish or County or to contact the person in charge of the show you are thinking about exhibiting in. Common Classes Offered in 4-H/FFA Shows in Louisiana: MARKET - mostly wethered males meat breed or cross of meat breed & other breeds. Some exhibitors do opt to show does in market classes. Rules vary from State to State & show to show, so please check with your county agent in your state or the Show Secretary or person in charge of the show you are thinking about exhibiting in. Here in Louisiana all Market Goats must have all milk teeth, must be dehorned & must be slick sheared from the knees up including the head, excluding the pom on the end of the tail. Non-bred doelings may show following all the above rules. COMMERCIAL DOE - unregistered does mostly boer crosses - as always check the rules of the show(s) you are planning to attend - some shows may require the does to be slick sheared or to have COM DOE tattooed in their ears & classes may vary - JLGA rules requires that all Commercial Does must have COM tattooed in one ear & DOE in the other - they do not have to be slick sheared & may with or without horns. FULL BLOOD BOER BUCKS - Registered Boer Bucks from purebred status up to 100% FULL BLOOD DOES - Registered Boer Does from purebred status up to 100% PERCENTAGE DOES - Registered percentage Boer Does from 50% up to purebred status AOB GOATS - Always remember to check with the individual shows you are planning to attend as some shows are different in what they class as AOB - Here in La. the 4-H shows AOB include all other breeds besides Boer - They have begin to have pygmy classes as the numbers have been increasing - For the JLGA Shows we divide our AOB classes to make it fairer for the kids competing because it is hard to compare a dairy breed to a meat breed - In the JLGA we have AOB Buck & Doe Classes which are any other meat breeds than boers such as Pygmy, Myotonic, Savannahs, any hair breeds such as Angora or Cashmere, or any dual purpose goats such as the Kinder breed - Also for JLGA shows the AOB goats must be registered purebred status up to 100% - Again always check with show personnel of the shows you are attending for their specific rules. The JLGA also has Dairy Doe & Buck Classes which are for Dairy breeds only as recognized by the American Dairy Goat Association - they must be registered American or Purebred. New for the 2010 JLGA Show Season, we will be having a pygmy wether class - These pygmy wethers must be registered with the National Pygmy Goat Association & have a wether certificate - for complete show rules for JLGA shows including classes & such, please follow the Rules & Guidelines link above. |
| If you still
are really undecided as to which
breed or class of goats is
right for you, visit a show in
your area. Almost any given weekend
there is a show going on
somewhere. For a list of JLGA
Shows, please follow the Upcoming

How do I take care of my goat? |
| MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO
REMEMBER: 1. Good Shelter - have a place that is warm & dry in the winter & rainy seasons & one that is well ventilated in the summer. Do a search on the internet. There are lots of goat breeders out there with pictures of their barns on their websites. 2. Good Nutrition - there are many different feeds with varying nutritional values to them. Best thing is to talk to the breeder where you purchased your goats & ask others that have been in the business for a while for advise on feeds 3. Fresh water - goats needs fresh water all the time. There is lots of information on the web concerning goat health & care, do a search. Some places that we like to go are listed below: Jack Mauldin - www.jackmauldin.com - great info on health & diseases & what to look for Onion Creek Ranch - www.tennesseemeatgoats.com - another great place for information. |
| Do you have a website that you would like to recommend? Please send the link to Cynthia Hailey at www.boeredsillygoatranch@hotmail.com |
|
How do I get started showing? |
| Showing is a great experience & teaches youth about responsibility, helping others, winning, & loosing. It's also a something that the whole family can get involved with. Youth shows offer a fun family oriented atmosphere where youth can show off their hard work with their goat projects. If you haven't started showing yet, we suggest you check out a youth goat show. Check the Upcoming Events page to find when a show maybe scheduled in or close to your area. You can also check with your parish 4-H agent. |
SOME SHOWS THAT ARE AVAILABLE: 4-H/FFA Shows - Parish, District Shows, State Fair of Louisiana, LSU State Livestock show, & Southern University Market Show - check with your Louisiana Parish 4-H Agent for information on these types of shows. Shows & Rules vary from state to state, so please check with the County Agent for your County outside the state of Louisiana. State Fair of Louisiana - held in late October - This shows offers showmanship, market, percentage doe, fullblood does, commercial does, AOB Does, & Pygmy Does. New for 2010 Buck Classes are back & will be offered for Registered Boer Bucks, AOB Bucks, & Pygmy Bucks. Please visit their website at: www.statefairoflouisiana.com

Associations, please check out our
Rules & Guidelines page &
scroll down to show rules regarding
AOB & Dairy Breeds. |
After you have decided to show, you need to decide what aspect of showing goats you are going to start with. Market or breeding or both. We invite you to come check out a show. There are lots of knowledgeable people there you don't mind talking to & helping other youth get started. There you can check out the market & breeding classes & also see what Showmanship is all about. |
Some shows are different from others in the classes they offer & rules regarding showing. So always check with the Show Manager or Show Secretary for complete information on shows you are looking at attending. Classes below are described using JLGA show rules. 1. MARKET GOATS - Mostly this class is boer or other meat cross wethers that are show as a meat animals & most of them are sold for slaughter as the end of their show career, which is until they loose their first tooth. Some youth who wish to show market, but don't want to let go of their goats choose to show non-bred does - At the end of their market show career, some go on to be shown in the doe classes - either Commercial Does - Percentage Does - or Fullblood Does. The most important things to remember about market goats is that both wethers & non-bred does must be dehorned, must have all their milk teeth, & must be slick sheared from the knees up including the head but leaving the tail. 2. COMMERCIAL DOES - This class is does that are not registered - Mostly this comes from using different breed bucks on unregistered, percentage, or fullblood does - Such as breeding a registered Nubian buck to percentage or fullblood boer does - the offspring are not eligible to be registered - most of the bucklings from these unions are used for market goats & the doelings are considered Commercial Does - These does can be shown with or without horns & do not have to be slick sheared. For the purpose of showing these goats at JLGA shows, ALL Commercial Does must have COM tattooed in 1 ear & DOE in the other. 3. PERCENTAGE DOES - This class is boer cross does that are at least 50% up to purebred status - Does must be registered - May show with or without horns. 4. FULLBLOOD DOES - This class is boer does from Purebred Status up to 100% - They may be shown with or without horns - They must be registered. 5. FULLBLOOD BUCKS - This class is boer does from Purebred Status up to 100% - They may be shown with or without horns - They must be registered. SPECIAL NOTE - Your 4-H/FFA Shows only offer AOB Classes - which is any other breed than boers including other meat, hair, & dairy goats - They all compete against each other for AOB Champions. Some 4-H Shows are beginning to offer Pygmy classes due to the increase in numbers of this breed showing. Please check with your Parish Agent for details on 4-H shos you are planning to attend. The JLGA has split their AOB Classes into the following & we pick Champions from each of the classes listed below: 6. AOB DOES - This is any meat breed other than boer or any hair breed - Must be registered purebred status or above - Goats shown in this class are to be shown & groomed according to their specific breed standards rules. Some goats you might see in this class - Kiko - Myotonics (Fainters) - Pygmies - For more complete information on goats shown in this class please visit our Rules & Guideline page & scroll down to show rules. There you will find a list of goat eligible to show in this class along with where to find more information of the specific breeds. 7. AOB BUCKS - Same as for the does, only this is a buck class. 8. DAIRY DOES - This is Dairy breeds only - Must be registered purebred status or above - Goats shown in this class must be slick sheared from the hoofs up including the head. Leave pom on end of tail & beards & headpieces (where applicable) on bucks. Some goats you might see in this class - Alpines - Nubians - Nigerian Dwarfs - For more complete information on goats shown in this class please visit our Rules & Guideline page & scroll down to show rules. There you will find a list of goat eligible to show in this class along with where to find more information of the specific breeds. 9. DAIRY BUCKS - Same as for the does, only this is a buck class.
10. PYGMY WETHERS - This is new
for the 2010 JLGA Show Season.
Must be registered with the National

| COLD WEATHER TIPS: 1. Toddler sweat shirts make great baby goat coats - use larger children sizes for older babies & even for wethers. 2. Dog coats are also good to use. 3. During hard freezes when you might loose water, store water in ice chest with secure lids, it doesn't freeze. |
